Im Zentrum des Vortrags wird die Ambiguität der Prometheus-Figur in der visuellen Kultur der frühen Neuzeit stehen. Während der Kühnheit  seiner Taten noch im 15. Jahrhundert mit Respekt und Bewunderung begegnet wurde, Prometheus sogar zur Allegorie des erfindungsreichen Künstlers aufstieg, schlug dies im späten 16., besonders aber im 17. Jahrhundert, um. Ins Zentrum der Darstellungen rückte nun die Bestrafung der als Anmaßung und Hybris wahrgenommen Taten. Ein Wandel, der nicht nur mit der Entdeckung anderer antiker Deutungen, sondern vor allem mit gewandelten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen vor dem Horizont der Glaubensspaltung und den hieraus resultierenden Sozialdisziplinierungsmaßnahmen zu begründen sein dürfte.

The focus of the lecture will be on the ambiguity of the Prometheus figure in the visual culture of the early modern period. While the boldness of his actions was regarded with respect and admiration in the fifteenth century (Prometheus even became the allegory of the inventive artist), this changed in the late 16^th, but especially in the 17^th century. The punishment of the pretension and hybris of his deeds moved to the centre of representations. A change that can be justified not only by the discovery of other ancient interpretations, but above all by changed social conditions against the backdrop of the Reformation and the resulting social disciplinary measures.

Victoria von Flemming is Professor of Art History of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Braunschweig in the Institut für Kunstwissenschaft. She has studied and researched in Kiel, Berlin, London, Paris, Turin, and Rome. She helped to found the Interdisciplinary Center for Early Modern Studies at the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main. Her research primarily focuses on early modern art, the history of science, gender formation, author referentiality in painting, and the art of modernism and postmodernism. Publications include Fassaden?: Zeigen und Verbergen von Geschichte in der Kunst (Fink Wilhelm Gmbh 2017), Barock-modern (Salon Verlag 2010, co-edited collection), and Modell Mittelalter:Aktualisierungen des Mittelalters in Kunst, Architektur, Literatur und Film seit dem 18. Jahrhundert(Salon Verlag 2010).
