M. A. Joelle Loew

Joelle Loew is a doctoral researcher at the English Department of the University of Basel, Switzerland; supervised by Prof. Dr. Miriam Locher in Basel and co-supervised by Prof. Stephanie Schnurr from the University of Warwick, England. In August 2018 she was awarded the Hermann Paul Scholarship in Linguistics by the HPSL to pursue her PhD.
She holds a BA in History and English from the University of Basel, and an MSc in Intercultural Communication for Business and the Professions from the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick, where she also worked as a research assistant. Her research interests are in professional and medical communication, particularly discourse analysis, gender, identity construction and relational work. Joelle worked as a researcher in the field of Digital Health at Warwick Medical School and at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), and has work experience in event and project management in Switzerland, South Africa, the UK and the US.
In her PhD project, she applies her interdisciplinary professional and academic experience in a linguistic case study of professional communication in agile IT teams, investigating collaborative, non-hierarchical work environments deploying agile methodologies with a focus on the construction and negotiation of personal, professional and gender identities in these settings.
Joelle was involved in teaching while working at the FHNW, taught Intercultural Student Workshops throughout her time at the University of Warwick and is currently adjunct lecturer in English Linguistics at the University of Basel. She co-authored a number of publications on her research projects and is still collaborating with colleagues at the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Warwick Medical School. She is doctoral representative in the Executive Committee of the Hermann Paul School of Linguistics Basel-Freiburg and the Kommission Diversity at the University of Basel. Together with her colleague Aline Bieri she runs a writing group for doctoral students of the HPSL.
