Profile Prof. em. Dr. Balz Engler
Balz Engler, Professor emeritus, taught English literature from 1980 to 2007. He has published a critical edition of Shakespeare’s Othello, which includes a German prose translation of the play, and written books on Shakespeare translation, on the relationship between poetic texts and their modes of communicating, and on literature as performance and its cultural implications. He has edited or co-edited nine collections of essays, among them one on community drama, on the history of English studies in Europe, and on Shakespeare in European culture, and initiated the HyperHamlet database project. He served on the boards of the European Society for the Study of English, the European Shakespeare Research Association, the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft and the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, which made him an honorary member in 2015.
