Workshop

Staging Plays and Characters

Tony Kingston (theatre director)

Following Tennessee Williams's dictum that ‘a play does not exist until it is on the stage’, this 90-minute practical workshop is designed to give the participants an introduction into the theoretical and practical study of dramatic texts through performing them live. This includes looking at different approaches to staging selected scenes and examining different dramatic characters from a dramaturgical perspective by exploring different ways of performing them. In the first part of the workshop, participants will be introduced to some basic acting techniques and theatre skills, starting with basic vocal and physical warm-up exercises. This is followed by experimenting with the visualisation and vocalisation of characters. Then, through a process of improvisation based on given texts we explore how these methods can be applied to understanding and analysing scenes, characters and dramatic structures in contemporary drama. (Participants will be informed of the text in advance). It is recommended that participants wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
