Reflections on Identity, Nativeness and English as a Lingua Franca in relation to Student Mobility and Language Learning
This talk will address two influential ideologies that have shaped language learning and teaching over the past 30 years: native-speakerism and monolingual ideology. Regarding native-speakerism, I will: (1) problematize the very concept of the ‘native speaker’; (2) demonstrate the continued pervasiveness of native-speakerism in contemporary language teaching and broader society; and (3) discuss potential strategies for gradually dismantling its influence. Concerning monolingual ideology, I will explore how it interferes with the genuine engagement of mobility students in experiencing the rich linguistic diversity of Europe. These two ideologies collectively obstruct the establishment of a truly multilingual Europe, where English, as a denationalized lingua franca, can effectively unite young people, facilitating the exchange of diverse perspectives, cultures, and languages.
