Facebook Blue and Filter Bubbles: Perspectives on Digital Culture in Contemporary British Fiction

Prof. Julia Straub (Université de Fribourg)

Based on the assumption that digital technologies have become ubiquitous, if not “banal” (Zara Dinnen) in 21st-century literature and culture, this presentation will explore the effects of “the digital” on contemporary English fiction. Rather than following the popular lead of the dystopian genre, I will trace writers’ productive engagement with the digital understood as (everyday) culture and communication. Particular attention will be paid to the creative work on the genre of the novel, and the new perspectives on notions of community that are offered by writers such as Bernardine Evaristo, Sarah Crossan, Rebecca Watson and Zadie Smith.
