Profile Aline Bieri
Aline Bieri is an assistant to Prof. Miriam Locher and an instructor for proseminars I and II in English linguistics at the English Department of the University of Basel (Switzerland). She is furthermore the doctoral representative in the HPSL executive committee of the University of Basel from August 2017–July 2019.
Aline Bieri holds an M.A. in English and Biology from the University of Basel and is now currently working on her PhD project supervised by Prof. Miriam Locher (University of Basel) and co-supervised by Prof. Ana Llinares (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). Her PhD is entitled "Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the Swiss Context: The linguistic challenges and implications of teaching a subject such as biology in English". Due to its specialised terminology, biology has often been considered unsuitable to be taught in a foreign language. Therefore, she is especially interested in the interface of biology as a subject and its linguistic requirements for students as well as for teachers in a CLIL and non-CLIL environment.
She has recently spent a one-year research stay from September 2017–August 2018 at the Departamento de Filología Inglesa of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as part of the UAM-CLIL research group under supervision of her thesis co-supervisor Prof. Ana Llinares. Since September 2018 she is back in Basel working as a teaching and research assistant at the English Department.
Her academic research interests in linguistics cover everything from sociolinguistics to historical linguistics to cognitive linguistics (with special emphasis on first and second language acquisition) and educational linguistics (focus on language teaching). Another major research interest in academics is the linguistics of football, where she, together with Dr. Ridvan Askin and Dr. Catherine Diederich has co-edited a volume entitled The Aesthetics, Poetics and Rhetoric of Soccerpublished by Routledge in 2018.
