From Novel to Film: Comparing Jhumpa Lahiri's Novel "The Namesake" with Mira Nair's Film Adaptation

Prof. Ambreen Hai (Smith College, Massachusetts)

This lecture explores how Mira Nair's 2007 film adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's 2003 novel The Namesake both pays tribute to and departs from its source text. Drawing upon the hybrid field of adaptation studies, this lecture will introduce some key theoretical concepts and frameworks, and then proceed to a comparison of selected scenes from the film and the novel. It will examine how Nair's film uses the audiovisual medium to make the novel come alive and to do a different kind of artistic and political work: how it enhances the multigenerational narratives and explores the gender dynamics of a South Asian diasporic arranged marriage as well as an interracial romantic relationship.
