SUMMARY:Mapping and Modelling the Transnational Circulation of English Poet
ry: An Introduction to the STEMMA project
DESCRIPTION:This paper introduces the ERC-funded project STEMMA\, which off
ers the first large-scale quantitative analysis of the manuscript circulat
ion of English poetry between 1475 and 1700. By necessity\, scholars have
tended to treat manuscripts as case studies\, but STEMMA seeks to identify
patterns and trends at scale. Ultimately\, it will reveal the emerging au
dience for English poetry to be more varied and more geographically disper
sed\, and yet also more interconnected\, than traditional methods of liter
ary historical research have allowed us to see.\\r\\nErin McCarthy is the
Principal Investigator of the Irish Research Council and European Research
Council-Funded project ‘STEMMA: Systems of Transmitting Early Modern Ma
nuscript Verse 1475-1700’ which computationally maps and models the move
ment of English poetry through early modern social networks. It will apply
insights from network analysis and graph theory to provide the most compr
ehensive overview of the circulation of early modern English verse in manu
 script to date.
